The first commercial maple sugar producers, Fred and Walter Duval, descendants of John Duval and heirs to the farm of Amice Duval, were Protestant Jersey residents who came to build the church in Caraquet.

They inherited from their father the famous sugar bush on Chemin des Duval, between Thériault Office and Maltempec. Highly regarded by the people of Bertrand and Thériault Office, the Duval brothers made a living from their sugar bush, producing sugar for the Canadian market for over sixty years. Walter and Fred, who died in 1963 and 1967 respectively, are buried in the cemetery behind the small Protestant church in Caraquet. They adopted their nephews, the Lecouteur brothers of Miscou. In the photo, the one holding the pipe is one of the Duval brothers; another is believed to be Valmond Lecouteur.
